Now Showing in Williamsburg: Precious at Movie Tavern
Friday, 05 February 2010 00:00

Precious-posterThe movie "Precious" is based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire, a  gritty account of life in Harlem. Precious suffers constant abuse at the hands of her unemployed mother and father.  Her family survives on welfare. The only way she survives her brutal life is to turn to her imagination and fantasies.

I really want to see this movie! I know the subject matter may sound depressing but "Precious" is a soul-baring drama that is ultimately full of hope.  The film premiered to acclaim at both the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and has already earned a lot of awards and nominations including three Golden Globe and Screen Actor Guild nominations, and 6 Oscar nominations.  It's no wonder Oprah Winfrey put her stamp of approval on this film (she's an executive producer!)

The film stars Gabourey Sidibe as the title character, with Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz in supporting roles.

"Precious" makes it debut today in Williamsburg for a limited engagement at the Movie Tavern.
