By Ripley's Believe It or Not
Do you know who is responsible for making the Star Spangled Banner our national anthem?
Of course, you guessed it Robert Ripley, because why else would we be asking, right?
The Star-Spangled Banner" became the official national anthem of the U.S. in 1931. And, believe it or not, it was Robert Ripley, the creator of "Ripley’s Believe It Or Not," who made it happen. Ripley was called a liar for making the "preposterous claim" that we didn’t have a national anthem. Turned out he was right. Congress had already voted six times against adopting "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the official anthem, although it had been popularly used as such for many years. The brouhaha that erupted after Ripley’s bombshell resulted in five million petitions from around the country. Congress finally bowed to popular sentiment.
