Celebrating the Mexican Holiday – Dia de los Muertos

By Genice Phillips

dia_de_los_muertosDia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead, is a 3-day holiday celebrated by the Latin American community around the world, in remembrance of the people who have passed away. Coinciding with All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2) , from Oct. 31st - Nov 2, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the deceased using many traditions.

Building private altars, bearing gifts of favorite foods and drinks or marigold flowers, are just a few ways that others communicate and connect with those who have passed on. Ofrendas, or offerings, are placed on the graves of the departed, as well as outside the home. At times, the event can take on a celebratory or humorous tone, as various accounts or stories are told about the deceased.

This event is traced back to the Aztecs, who ritualized and celebrated the dead, often using symbols of skeletons, skulls, and the crucifix. These traditions and observances have transferred to modern times, as other cultures (African, Asian) have similar celebrations that center around the dead.

The significance of the holiday is to celebrate those who have moved on to a higher form. Those who celebrate the Day of the Dead connect with the souls of their loved ones, often praying for assistance and peace, evoking feelings of happiness and joy.

Even if one might not understand the significance of the celebration, let's still remember all of our friends and loved ones who have passed on.
