2010 Driving and Vehicle Service Outlook
Compliments of American Pride Automotive
Some of the trends we see for 2010 include people holding on to cars for a year or two longer than they have in the past. The feedback we get from our customers is that many are taking extra care of their cars to extend the life.
In the past routine maintenance may not have been as diligently performed. Now we're seeing customers every few months for the service visits that keep vehicles operating well -- oil changes, tune ups, tire rotations, coolant flushes, transmission fluid changes and more. It's not that cars need more service -- more that people are paying more attention to regular service items so their cars last longer. It makes sense.
Another trend we anticipate for 2010 is a strengthening in quality pre-owned vehicle sales. With the advent of services like CarFax, it's easier than ever to get a dependable used car, without worrying you're buying someone else's problems. We think there will be an increase in used car sales, but only with the reliable, proven sales centers that also service what they sell. There may actually be a decrease in lower-end used car offerings other than through private party sales.
Unfortunately, one area where we expect continued decline in 2010 is in road maintenance. City and State budgets are stretched thin and potholes and upkeep is likely to suffer. That means more wear-and-tear on tires, suspension and other components. Good for repair centers, but not good for vehicle owners! There are a few things you can do if you do find troublesome roads. First, call the city and let them know about the problem. They may already know, but sometimes it's the squeaky wheel that gets attention first.
Second, remember where the major potholes are and avoid them -- change lanes ahead of time if needed, and increase your following distance from the car in front of you so you have time to react and gently avoid the trouble spots.
One final suggestion -- take a few minutes now to write reminders on the calendar for upcoming oil changes and checkups, and your state inspection. A few minutes planning now will ensure you don't forget the scheduled maintenance issues later when life starts getting in the way.
