Today, Monday November 9, 2009 marks twenty years since the Berlin Wall fell. That momentous event heralded the end of the Cold War and marked a major advancement in human freedom and dignity, and its twentieth anniversary surely merits some celebration.
Scranton University, in Pennsylvania, is hosting a special film festival this month in honor of the anniversary. The film festival is to present films by East German filmmakers, and is intended to highlight the often under-represented East German efforts against the Berlin Wall. Films shown at this festival will offer a look at 1980s Berlin through East German eyes.
Berlin itself has prepared for a large number of visitors this month. There is a multimedia, GPS-assisted tour available for visitors, who can walk or bike along the site of the Berlin Wall, and at key points a gadget will teach them about the history of the area, using historical footage and historical audio recordings.
For a more light-hearted look at the days of '89, you could also check out the film Good Bye Lenin! This 2003 off-beat comedy tells the story of a man who has to pretend that the Wall hasn't come down, for the sake of his bed-ridden mother, whose doctor worries that the shock of the events of November, 1989 might cause her to have another heart attack.
